Why Paddleboarding is Easier (and More Fun) Than You Think

Never Paddleboarded before? You're not alone. And you're going to love it!

Here's why stand-up paddleboarding is the laid-back adventure you didn't know you needed.

A couple paddleboards in Vermont with Clyde River Recreation

Let's be honest, trying something new can be a little intimidating. But what if your summer "first" wasn't scary? Just splashy, smiley, and maybe even a little wobbly in the best way?

Welcome to the world of stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP for short. It's one of the most beginner-friendly ways to get on the water, and the calm, winding stretch of the Clyde River makes the perfect launchpad for your first adventure.

Why SUP Is Simpler Than It Looks

If you've seen people gliding across glassy lakes on paddleboards and thought, "I could never do that," think again. SUP boards are wide, stable, and built for balance. You don't need perfect core strength, yoga skills, or a background in water sports... just a willingness to try, and maybe laugh a little as you find your footing.

At Clyde River Recreation, we've seen first-timers of all ages and abilities get the hang of it within minutes. Many people actually start by kneeling, which makes the transition to standing totally optional. You don't have to "crush it." Just float, explore, and enjoy.

The Calm Water Advantage

Not all rivers are created equal. The Clyde River is known for its gentle current, peaceful backwaters, and long stretches of stillness that feel more like a lake than a river. This makes it the ideal SUP spot. No waves. No boat traffic. Just smooth water and plenty of space to take your time. Just be back by our posted closing hours to catch your ride.

Tips for Getting Started with Confidence

Thinking about giving SUP a try? Here are a few simple tips to help you feel steady from the start:

  • Start on your knees: Get a feel for the board before standing. It's totally fine to paddle seated or kneeling the whole time!
  • Keep your eyes up: Looking at the horizon (instead of your feet) helps with balance.
  • Use your whole paddle: Keep your hands spaced and use your core, not just your arms, to paddle with ease.
  • Dress for splashes: Quick-dry clothes or a bathing suit + sunscreen = your best SUP uniform.
  • Go slow, go solo, or bring a buddy, just go: Whether you paddle alone or with a friend, make it your own kind of adventure.

Not Sure About a Longer Paddle? Try a 1-Hour SUP Rental

If you're curious about paddleboarding but not ready to commit to a full 3-hour trip, our hour-long SUP rentals are the perfect way to dip your paddle in. It's a low-pressure chance to test the waters, build your confidence, and see what makes stand-up paddleboarding so peaceful and fun, without overcommitting.

We've Got the Gear, Just Bring Yourself

Whether you're trying SUP for the first time or returning for another float, we'll set you up with everything you need: a stable, beginner-friendly board, an adjustable paddle, a life jacket, and friendly guidance to help you feel at ease before you even leave the shore.

Want a quiet solo float? A new family memory? Or just a chance to say you tried something new this summer? The Clyde River is calling. And we promise, stand-up paddleboarding is way more fun (and doable!) than you think.
